Costa Brava Tourism Guide - Calella

Not to be confused with Calella de Palafrugell further north on the Costa Brava, Calella de la Costa resort south of Blanes sits on the lesser known Costa del Maresme. You're a little closer to Barcelona down here on this rather exclusive stretch of coast renowned for its superb beaches and good family facilities. The Costa Maresme (meaning Coast of the Swamp!) north of Barcelona incorporates main locations Calella, Arenys de Mar and El Masnou. Calella particularly on the Costa del Maresme is a superb beach resort for families with easy access into Barcelona City (and indeed north to Girona). Big family attractions such as Marineland in Palafolls and the Watersports centre within Calella are within easy reach too!

You can expect some divine blue flag beaches down this way! Calella's 3km beach area is beautiful fine white sand and blue flag. It's quieter down here too as compared to bustling Lloret further north. Numerous cultural and historical sites are in the area, including archaeological sites at Burriac and Mataro and some stunning Baroque architecture in Arenys de Mar. Calella is the main town/resort on the Costa Maresme with a good choice of restaurants, bars and lively nightlife.

Calella de la Costa, Costa Del Maresme Holidays Spain

Beautifully set Calella (natural parks surround it) is south of Blanes on the stretch of coast now known as Costa del Maresme. At just 50 km north of Barcelona (and 60km from Barcelona Airport), it's an excellent coastal resort location with easy access down into Spain's most popular city.

Popular with the Spanish, as well as international visitors, Calella is rather chic and modern, and its stunning beach stretch is its biggest attraction. This alongside a choice of year round festivals, superb shopping choice, an array of sports including swimming, sailing, beach volleyball and local walking in the adjacent Montnegre Corredor Natural Park.

Calella's a good beach holiday choice for families, especially if you're looking for a close beach base to Barcelona. Nearly all of Calella's 15 public square have a kids play area! Calella's three main beaches - Platja Gran, Garbi Beach and Les Roques beach are wide and long (see photos via the Calella Costa Maresme Tourist webguide right). Lots of green space here too including the Dalmau Park right in the centre of the town. Calella's promenade has a cultural edge - its modernist style is thanks to the input of architect Jeroni Martorell in 1927. The promenade is a hub for kids playing, cultural events and concerts! The Sagales Barcelona bus runs frequently between Calella and Barcelona, stopping on the way at Arenys De Mar and Mataro before heading into Barcelona. Easy daytrips into Barcelona to Calella are easy done then by bus (takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour). Check the Sagales weblink right for Barcelona Bus timetable.
