Benahavis is close to Marbella, to the north west, directly up the right turn off before you reach Estepona. The road up to Benahavis ends there. The stunning peaks of the Sierra Bermeja covered in Spanish Fir behind Benahavis separates it from the Serrania de Ronda and has contained both development and the extension of the road.
You're hardly isolated in Benahavis however, as it's a quick drive back down to the Mediterranean coast, and there's been considerable tourist development in the village, including a choice of accommodation and well over 20 restaurants - some of which are high culinary and expensive. Benahavis promotes itself as a centre for Spanish cuisine and so it is. The village is popular for day trip lunches and evening dining up from Marbella and the coast. Benahavis is a prime centre for Costa Del Sol golf too, with a choice of golf courses in its surrounds, and plenty of nearby Marbella golf too. Its close proximity to Marbella and the Costa coast has made it easy for Benahavis to develop as a rural tourist centre for both golf and cuisine.
The drive up to Benahavis gives you an albeit brief appreciation of the beauty of rural inland Andalucia. You're pushing up towards the Sierra Bermeja via the Las Angosturas canyon and this early section sees carob, Spanish fir, pine, oak and fig trees come into view. Before you know it you arrive in Benahavis, which retains its white village centre but has seen considerable tourist development, albeit contained by the mountain backdrop, in recent years.
Benahavis promotes itself as the culinary capital of the Costa Del Sol, and with 20 plus restaurants that's understandable. Restaurants such as the Hotel Amanhavis on Calle del Pillar (Tel. (00 34) 952 85 6026), which specialises in creative Andalucian cuisine are more expensive. There are plenty of other restaurant choices in Benahavis a little easier on the pocket. Benahavis has a selection of luxury spa golf hotels with deluxe rustic rural styled rooms and terraces.
Most tourist development like apartment building has taken place to the south of the village centre and leans towards the luxury end. Benahavis has Moorish roots, of which it makes much, and historic sights within the town include the Montemayor castle which hails from the Moorish period pre-1492 and Christian takeover, Virgen del Rosario church, a 16th century palace and watchtowers.

Accessed off the Ronda road, Los Arqueros golf course was designed by Severiano Ballesteros and offers both a challenging round and sublime views of mountains and coast.
