Costa del Sol Tourism Guide - Costa Tropical

The Costa Tropical coastal area sits just beyond Nerja incorporating the main towns of Almunecar, Motril and Salobrena. These three destinations are the most popular holiday bases in the area, and growing, with a number of historic attractions (particularly Phoenician and Roman), blue flag long beaches and a quieter more Spanish feel than neighbouring Costa Del Sol resorts. You're in the Granada region here on the Costa Tropical coast (Motril is just 45 minutes by car from Granda and its Alhambra).

Almunecar Costa Tropical

Pretty Almunecar sits on a promontory between the river estuaries of the Rio Verde and Rio Seco. Founded by the Phoenicians, Almunecar is the largest of the Costa Tropical resorts and was once a strategic Roman port. Almunecar's tourist information office sits on Avenida de Europa within a mid-19th century neo Moorish building.

Known for its striking Arab citadel high on the hill Almunecar's rich history blends well with its low key resort facilities. Various reminders of the town's history are in evidence including Roman and Phoenician remains of temples, theatres and aqueducts.

Stroll around Almunecar's narrow winding streets which push out from central Plaza de La Constitucion up to the citadel and Aluncecar's old quarter. The town has two pretty beaches interrupted by cliffs. The distinctive three large rocks called Penones sit off-shore. A number of museums are within the town, and watersports such as diving, windsurfing and sailing are easily accessed. For information see the extensive Almunecar Town Council Tourist guide weblink right.

Salobrena & Motril Costa Tropical

The Costa Tropical choice of main resorts, identified closely with the Granada region (see Granada Regional Tourism weblink right) really are some of Southern Spain's best. Salobrena is a superb blend of sea, tourist resort, culture and historical sights including its impressive hilltop Arab castle, Mohammedan Church, Brocal Tower, floral promenade and Archaeological exhibition. The town has its own tropical park too - Parque de la Fuente. Windsurfing, beach volleyball, deep sea angling and rod fishing and local golf are all on the menu here at Salobrena. For a full Salobrena guide see the Town Halls excellent one linked right.

A little further along the Costa Tropical coast sits bustling Motril. A key advantage of basing yourself on one of the Granada regions pretty coastal resorts is you've easy access to Granada and its Alhambra. Motril is just 45 minutes from Granada via the N323. Phoenician and Roman history is prevalent here, but Motril developed as an urban community under the Arabs who called it Mu-Tra-Yil. The Catholics renamed it Motril after their conquest of the town in 1489. They expelled the Muslims from Motril later in 1507.

Motril today is pulling in the tourist visitors, and is particularly popular with the Spanish. Its autonomous Port and fishing harbour is attractive indeed and yacht and sailing clubs are located here. Motril's 20km of beaches are another of its attractions, dotted with both cliffs and Muslim watchtowers. The Sierra Nevada mountains, often snow capped in winter, make for a sublime backdrop. Watersports and hiking/walking are easily access from the town. Checkout the extensive Motril tourist webguide right for links and details.
