Torremolinos has a long history as a gay friendly and welcoming resort - actually Torre is welcoming to all, that's a big part of its magic. As the comprehensive guide to the gay scene in Torremolinos - Costagay (see weblink right) explains, local residents often tipped off the few initial gay bars open here in Torremolinos in the early 1970s when a police raid was expected. Today not only does Torremolinos get a huge number of gay holiday visitors, it also has a huge gay resident population with a large number of gay owned bars and a sauna. Budget gay holidays don't come much better than Torre on the Costa del Sol. Gay Torremolinos' main hub is the La Nogalera area where a host of great gay bars and the chic club Emporio await. Torremolinos in general is an all welcome, gay friendly town with a large resident gay population as well as a huge number of gay visitors annually.
Whooper Torremolinos nightclubs like the Palladium and Passion sit on central Avenida Palma de Mallorca, the main street hub for Torremolinos central nightlife. You'll find plenty of choice on the Torremolinos bar front around the central plazas and Calle San Miguel, as well as lining the beach fronts. Most Torremolinos hotels have their own bustling bars too, and the bigger hotels offer a programme of in-house entertainment. The best thing about Torre's nightlife is you can take your choice between pumping and lively nightlife clubland areas such as Avenida Palma de Mallorca, or push down to the beach for quieter bars and restaurants.
The hub of Gay Torremolinos is around the La Nogalera area near Torremolinos' train station. Favourite Torre gay bars around La Nogalera include Anfora, a mostly women bar, friendly Bar Bacchus and relax Lounge El Gato. Nightclubs in Torremolinos might not be large in number compared to club meccas like Ibiza, but what there is is superb, particularly Emporio in La Nogalera. Torremolinos Nightclubs include the big ones Passion and Palladium, both on central Torremolinos' Avenida Palma de Mallorca. Favourite Torre clubs these with several dance floors a piece and a choice of visiting DJs. (see Passion's weblink right). Buzzing though and a nod more to innovative Spanish DJs particularly is Emporio in the La Nogalera area (see weblink right and links to regular DJs here like Miguel Picasso and Paco Mena amongst others).
Costagay (weblink right) offers the best listings of Torremolinos gay bars, saunas and clubs on the web. Checkout the link right. The main hub for Torremolinos clubland is Avenida Palma de Mallorca. If you're looking for a choice of quieter bars push into some of Torremolinos' central plazas, or head down to the beachfront where a huge choice of beach bars awaits.
Benalmadena's Casino Torrequebrada is a popular venue for big glamour shows, particularly in high season. The Flamenco shows here are especially popular, you'll see them advertised in leaflets all around Torremolinos and in your hotel. To find Benalmadena's casino yourself follow the detailed directions on the Torrequebrada Casino's weblink right - it sits on Avenida del Sol, s/n, 29630 Benalmadena Malaga Spain. Tel. 00 34 95 244 6000. Without your own transport you can hop on the bus from Torre to Benalmadena (timetable right), or hook into the many show excursions available. The big flamenco shows are slick, professional and great fun. At Benalmadena Casino you can expect a choice of glamour cabaret shows a la Las Vegas style on offer too during peak season. For more cosy flamenco shows in Torremolinos head to La Bodega, San Miguel 40, central Torremolinos. Tel. 95 238 73 37. La Bodega is renowned too for its great tapas and free flowing beer.
Also popular for flamenco in Torremolinos is Taberna Flamenca Pepe Lopez on Plaza de la Gamba Alegre. Tel. 95 238 12 84, again centrally placed in Torremolinos. Many of the flamenco performers here come in from Seville and Granada and nightly shows usually run from around 10pm from April to October. Outside of peak summer season entrance fees are cheaper.
Torremolinos hosts a number of fiestas and celebrations. The big one is in September - Feria de San Miguel, plus the celebrated festivities of Tourist Day in October - homage to the many visitors who continue to come here year after year. For equestrian shows and bull fighting, leaflets circulate widely within Torremolinos hotels and in the tourist information centre for Plaza de Toros shows on Camino Manantiales.
