The historic medieval architecture of Girona and the Roman remains at Tarragona are well known to visitors holidaying on the Costa Dorada. There's more however - have you heard about Lleida's spectacular Romanesque Gothic Cathedral, not to mention its great arts and shopping scene.
Inland Reus, north west of Tarragona claims the main Costa Dorada airport - Reus Airport has seen passenger numbers more than double in the last 10 years, serving both the Costa Dorada resorts and main cities Reus itself alongside Lleida and Tarragona. Reus in the late 19th/early 20th centuries was Catalonia's second big Modernista centre to Barcelona, and birthplace of the master Gaudi himself. A huge selection of Modernista architecture is here to see in Reus, both municipal and private residences. It's all nicely packaged now under the heading of the Reus Modernista Route - not to be missed for Gaudia and Modernista fans!
Lleida inland from Reus and Tarragona is one of Catalonia's lesser known cities, but there's a lot to miss if you pass it by! Lleida is a modern university city with an impressive arts and culture scene and a choice of fine museums and art galleries. Here too in Lleida are a selection of Roman and Medieval. Lleida's cathedral (La Seu Vella) is a superb example of Romanesque Gothic.
Lleida hosts a number of Fiestas and Carnivals throughout the year (see Lleida webguide right for listings) and it also boats an impressive selection of museums. A visit to the Museu d'art Jaume Morera is not to be missed (find it on Carrer Major, 31 (Edifici Casino) 25007 Lleida. tel. (0034) 973 700 419. A tour of Lleida's architecture is as fascinating as a tour of Girona's! Construction on Lleida's mammoth cathedral Seu Vell began in 1203 under Pere de Coma. Thought to be sited on the grounds of a former mosque, building work on Seu Vella continued well into the 14th century. For a full history and photography see the Regional Lleida webguide right. The Seu Vella isn't Lleida's only architectural gem either - move on to the Palau de la Paeria (city hall) for one of the most representative and striking examples of Romanesque civil architecture you're likely to see.

La Mitjana and the River Segre Nature parks are on Lleida's doorstep, plus if you like a city with good shopping, you'll rather like Lleida. Museums alongside Lleida's acclaimed art gallery include The City of Water Museum, Museum of Lleida and the Marian Academy.
With Barcelona so closely associated with the work of Antoni Gaudi, you might not know that Gaudi was actually born here in Reus. Gaudi's birthplace is a modernisme extravaganza in itself, with around 30 Modernista buildings in the city. The work of municipal architect Pere Caselles is particularly prevalent with examples of his work including public and private buildings. Reus also boats numerous industrial modernista buildings like the Escorxador (the abattoir) and the Estacio Enologica (wine institute).
Reus truly is a mecca for modernist architecture fans, all packaged up neatly by Reus Tourist board into a now Reus Modernisme Trail (download the leaflet via the Reus Tourist webguide right). Modernisme Guided tours are also available.
The Gaudi Centre in Reus (weblink right) guides you through the influences on Antoni Gaudi, alongside a journey through Modernisme in Reus through the 19th and 20th centuries. During the 19th century Reus was an important centre within Catalonia, second only to Barcelona. For a real insight into Gaudi's influences a visit here goes a long way, as surrounded by a flourishing of Modernisme during early life in Reus was a key influence on Gaudi's later work in Barcelona. Spread across 3 floors in the Gaudi centre, the first floor takes a close look at Modernis Reus and its buildings, whilst the second and third floors dig deep into Gaudi's work and influences. The Gaudi Centre in Reus sits just above the main Tourist Office, and makes for a perfect starting point before taking the Reus Modernisme trail.

Reus Airport is proving increasingly popular with visitors from the United Kingdom. Most charter flights to Reus come from the UK. Many visitors will be connecting on from Reus to Barcelona, but others will be heading for the Costa Dorada coast and a short transfer time to popular Costa Dorada resorts like Salou.
Reus Airport sits just 3km southeast of Reus city (Antoni Gaudi's birthplace) and 13km for Tarragona with its historic medieval and Roman architecture. A number of low cost budget airlines run routes from UK airports direct to Reus, making the choice of cheap flights here excellent (see cheap flights Reus weblink right for flight comparison prices and booking). Passenger numbers moving through Reus airport have more than doubled between 1997 to 2007, and due to demand another terminal is currently being constructed here at Reus.
Bus service from Reus airport to Barcelona, Tarragona and elsewhere on the Costa Dorada is excellent. The main bus services is provided by Hispano Igualadina (weblink right for Reus Airport to Barceleona and elsewhere). Timetables for buses from Reus to Barcelona and elsewhere are matched to flight arrival times.
