Other Spain Tourism Guide - Andorra

Sitting snugly into the Pyrenees between Spain and France, Andorra undoubtedly contains the best of the Pyrenees skiing. A considerable amount of money has been spent on sprucing up Andorra's ski resorts in recent years, and it's paying off with increasing numbers of skiers heading to Andorra, especially for family skiing holidays.

Not just skiing however pulls visitors to Andorra. Outside of the winter months Andorra is a hotspot for numerous outdoor leisure pursuits with winter skiing areas such as Pal offering walking holidays alongside horse riding, go karting, archery and mountain biking. Challenging walks await in this autonmous region around walking hotspots such as the Ordino area (see Ordino webguide right). Move outside of capital Andorra La Vella along one of Andorra's three main roads (Andorra is just 25km from the north to the south, and 29km from east to west) and discover Andorra's many rivers, lakes and mountains offering everything from gentle family walks to full on long treks. The Andorran Mountaineering Federation has divided up the main Andorra treks into seven 14km stretches. Checkout the Andorra Official Tourist guide right for details. Andorra Skiing Holidays

Andorra has so many prime skiing areas and skiing resorts that the principality is split into Andorra skiing regions. Those to the north bordering France come under the Grandvalira heading. This area includes skiing hotspot resort areas such as Canillo, Soldeu, Grau Roig, El Tarter and Encamp and is the largest ski area in the Pyrenees so particularly popular. (see Grandvalira Skiing area webguide right).

Expect guaranteed snow around the big Andorran Soldeu-El Tarter skiing resort area alongside stunning landscapes. Soldeu was one of Andorra's first skiing areas to emerge and offers a huge choice of ski runs surrounding it. This Grandvalira ski resort is particularly popular with families and groups, and good for all skiing levels from beginner to advanced. Many point to Soldeu as the best skiing area within Andorra - the resort sits right in the heart of the Grandvalira skiing area and is especially popular with British skiers. To the west of Soldeu, Canillo is a little quieter and serves as both a good skiing and summer activity walking holiday base. El Tarter is also picking up speed as a good skiing base in the area.

On the western side of Andorra incorporating main Andorra ski resorts Pal and Arinsal and north the Ordino Arcalis ski area, these all loosely fall under the Vallnord skiing area of Andorra. La Massana is the main way into the Pal Arinsal ski region. Pal is the quieter ski resort of the two, and does well out of winter season too for summer outdoor activity holidays. From Pal you're still within easy reach of bustling Andorra ski resort Arinsal. This ski resort is one of Andorras busiest and most built up, with gondola taking you up from the village to the ski slopes. Particularly good for beginner skiers, Arinsal's slopes are nice and open. It's a popular budget Andorra skiing base especially for families with younger children wanting to learn to ski. A particularly good ski school is situated in Arinsal. It's perfectly feasible now to base yourself centrally in Andorra's capital Andorra La Vella. New gondolas run direct from Encamp just to the north of the capital upto the Soldeu, Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa skiing resort areas. Likewise, buses run regularly from Andorra de Vella west through La Massana onto Ordino.

The Vallnord skiing region and resorts cater well for families, offering a host of activities. Checkout the Vallnord regions webguide right for details on kids clubs, children's snow parks and ski passes for groups and families. One thing to note is that on the western side the ski resort slopes can be just a tad colder than those to the north. On the plus side, Andorra's west side gets the snow earlier, and it lasts longer!
