Other Spain Tourism Guide - Pyrenees Aragon

The Aragon Pyrenees contain some of the highest peaks in the range (Cerler is the highest ski resort), and most will point to them as Spain's most dramatic Pyrenees mountains on the Spanish side. The best of Spanish skiing and walking holidays are in the area, with renowned marked trails such as the Camino de Santiago heading towards pilgrimage site Santiago de Compostela running through stunning Aragon Pyrenees villages such as Jaca. Main commercial centre Huesca offers a delightful old town with historic cathedral and a selection of museums including the Museo de Huesca which contains works by Goya. Popular and well known Aragon Pyrenees skiing resorts, all with excellent ski facilities, including Astun, Panticosa, Formigal and the Candanchu close to the French Border. Formigal has the liveliest apres-ski, and is best for beginner, intermediate and family skiing holidays. A number of airports, both French and Spanish, serve the Pyrenees. Heading into the Aragon Pyrenees, on the Spainish side access into the area is via Barcelona, Bilbao, Girona, Zaragoza and Pamplona airports.

Aragon Pyrenees Ski Resorts Skiing Holidays Spain

Popular Aragon Pyrenees ski resort Candachu is situated north of Jaca near the French border. Not as well known as Astun (although with the opening of new winter sports stadium it's likely to develop more of a reputation), Candanchu is a gem of a Spanish ski resort with excellent services within the resort including ski school, and a choice of ski runs across the blue, red, green and top challenge black range. Leisure and resort facilities are good with kids creche, a choice of restaurants and cafes, sauna and massage facilities and historic Jaca is just a 15 minute drive to the south. For more information on Candanchu see the Candanchu Tourist guide with snow report right. For Candanchu accommodation see listings here on Iknow Spain/Aragon Pyrenees.

A mere 3km to the east of Candanchu sits the better known Astun, a popular resort for the big skiing competitions. Astuns 27 pistes offer a choice of beginner to Black difficult runs and excellent ski resort facilities including 5 ski lifts, discos, indoor heated swimming pools, bars, restaurants, good accommodation choice and ski school. Buses run regularly up here to both Astun and Candanchu from nearby Jaca. (For accommodation in Astun see listings here on Iknow Spain/Aragon Pyrenees).

Moving towards the central Aragon Pyrenees, Panticosa skiing resort is one of the Aragon Pyrenees' most stunning resorts situated in the Tena Valley. It's modern and well resourced too with 38 slopes across the range and numerous ski chair lifts. Facilities including the pretty local village, cable car, 6 chair lifts and a choice of restaurants and accommodation (see Iknow Spain/Aragon Pyrenees for accommodation in Panticosa). Slightly quieter than the Aragonese Pyrenees skiing resorts of Formigal and Cerler, Panticosa is a good one for expert skiers. You're still within easy reach of lively apres-ski resort Formigal.

As all inclusive lively skiing resorts go, Formigal within the Aragon Pyrenees is one of the best. Perfect for both beginner and intermediate skiiers, and an ideal Spanish ski resort for families, Formigal is easily reach via Zaragoza Airport. 57 km of marked runs await, alongside numerous facilities including a choice of budget family restaurantts and bars, an excellent choice of accommodation, indoor leisure facilities including indoor swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi. Nightlife apres-ski can get pretty lively too. See the Formigal webguide right for more information. Cerler to the east of the Aragon Pyrenees, not far from the Catalonian border, is the highest of the Aragon Pyrenees ski resorts. Spectacular views of the Benasque Valley await. No big commercial pretensions here, just a real focus on skiing. Resort facilities are good with ski school, snowboarding, bars, cafes and some restaurants to hand. Benasque is the nearest town.
